After sitting for about 17 hours, the truck started right back up again from a cold start.  Dad drove it straight home.

Turned it off, tried starting again.  No go.

Damn thing must have a 6 hour timeout.  It won't start warm!

Pfui, STriker, the answer's obvious! (And cheap!) 4 bags of ice, liberally applied unde the hood should do it. Oh, and take the ice out of the bag...plastic melty issues, ya know... ;*)>

That's an idea...

Dad thinks it may actually be the fuel pump, which is inside the fuel tank itself. What fun.

I agree with this, as the same thing was happening to my friend's truck only last week and it turned out to be the fuel pump.

If that's the case, you may want to see if the engine operates on a pressurized fuel system. If it does, there should be a little tire-stem type thing under the hood. You can push on it and see if fuel shoots out when it's not starting properly. If there's not enough fuel pressure it very well could be the fuel pump.

(That was one of the diagnosis steps we did with the buick. :)

I had this problem with my Buick Regal. It turned out in that case that oil had dripped down into the crankshaft sensor and it wouldn't operate while the oil in the sensor was warm. Replacing that sensor made the thing work... at least for another 6-8 months. I had to replace that sensor frequently from then on out. ($15 per pop.)

To get into any more detailed diagnosis I'd have to have more details. I doubt it'd be a crankshaft sensor, unless it's an electronic ignition S10, but there may be some other similar problems of fluid getting where it doesn't belong when the engine is warm, or some part that is expanding due to heat, etc.

BTW, do you know what engine it's on? Is it a V6 2.8, 3.1, or maybe a 3800?

This is what you do:

Turn the key three times. Be sure to groan in frustration.

look over your shoulder as if checking a flux capacitor, then to your dashboard for a clock.

Bellow an inarticulate groan and bash your forehead into the steering wheel.

Should work right afterwards.
