After sitting for about 17 hours, the truck started right back up again from a cold start.  Dad drove it straight home.

Turned it off, tried starting again.  No go.

Damn thing must have a 6 hour timeout.  It won't start warm!

If that's the case, you may want to see if the engine operates on a pressurized fuel system. If it does, there should be a little tire-stem type thing under the hood. You can push on it and see if fuel shoots out when it's not starting properly. If there's not enough fuel pressure it very well could be the fuel pump.

(That was one of the diagnosis steps we did with the buick. :)
