An intresting discussion came out of an IRC channel.

For a Sci-Fi movie to be good, it must be rated R.

Take a look at these movies, they're all rated R:
Blade Runner
Total Recall
Terminator
The Matrix
Alien (and it's sequils)

...all good movies, because they didn't hold back. Now, look at the bombs.

Star Trek: Nemisis -- PG-13, was a tired genre, and had bad release timing.
Lost in Space -- PG-13.
Planet of the Apes -- PG-13.
Mars Attacks -- PG-13 (and too campy to boot!!!)

The only exception which could be found is the live action Lord of the Rings. PG-13, yes, but everything else overcomes it. Besides, from what I hear, Tolkein would of talked the nudity to death in the books.

As strange as it sounds, it does fit as SciFi.... because officially for some dumb reason, Fantasy is SciFi.

Go Figure :)
