Alot of folks are comparing this to Challenger, which blew up 17 years ago from what I'm reading.

However, if you've done a good bit of research, you'll find a nice little fact about *HOW* Challenger blew up. Dr. Feyman showed Congress how the rings that connect each part of the booster rockets (hint, they're not all one solid peice) are very brittle in cold tempteratures (aka high up in the atmosphere).

This one, however, looks like to be a different chain of events, from what I've seen on the news. Maybe being 9 hours out of the loop is done some good.

My physics teacher in 8th grade was 2nd in line to go up into the Challenger (if the other teach that DID go up was sick, then he'd go.) So, I got a long lecture about it.
Apparently, since NASA was very poor back then (by lack of funds), the technical staff used a bad/faulty o-ring on the booster rockets. So the fuel got loose and caused the explosion. The whole point of the Challenger was to drum up funding for NASA. (Which is why they let the teacher go up, to make America feel like the layman could be a part of the space programs.)
