  • 07:11:05: @merlyn it's a tshirt on http://shirts.woot.com hit the reckoning link to buy it.
  • 07:13:58: @Lance_Foxx Had that. Bro in law & Sis had to finish their house. One of the contractors committed suicide! Other went bankrupt.
  • 09:31:23: I'm getting a refund from AT&T? Because of illegal collection of Internet Taxes? http://bit.ly/cE6PNx
  • 16:44:22: MARC Penn 435 running late due to xfer of broken 533's passengers.
  • 17:57:38: @Firr Your hd just flaked out. Can the BIOS see the drive?
  • 18:02:20: @Firr Can you boot from a CD? And got a spare PC to burn a CD off of?
  • 18:08:14: @Firr Just DM'ed you your next step.
  • 18:35:34: @Firr Let Spinrite work it's magic. If the HD's completely borked, it's a $100 to replace it (and they're usually easy to swap out)
  • 18:36:26: @Firr Although I know of much cheaper ($800) Asus laptops that work just as well.
  • 18:37:02: @Firr That'll go down rapidly as it goes through the drive. It *is* slow by nessessity as it massages your drive.
  • 18:37:59: @Firr However, Spinrite being able to access it is a good thing. There's a good chance of recovering the drive.
  • 18:44:26: @Firr http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114905 $1300, free shipping. Slightly lower spec, though.
  • 18:45:40: @Firr I can go lower with a Intel i7 720QM CPU.
  • 18:58:08: @Firr Just checked, UPS even next day is under $50 to me.
  • 19:12:35: @Firr Completely crashed or gracefully errored out?
  • 19:18:57: @Firr Oh boy, it overheated. Give it five to cool and try booting normally.
  • 19:28:10: @Firr You mean $90 for the software and $100 for a new HD?
  • 23:26:44: @Firr That's on your booted NTFS partition, right? Ugh...
  • 23:27:31: @Firr If you can, leave it overnight, then try booting into the recovery OS. You definitely need a new HD in there.
  • 23:27:49: @Firr Thankfully, those are cheaper than getting a whole new laptop.
  • 23:28:46: Off to bed. Night, you crazy peoples.

Is it really that bad for contractors now?

Also totally not surprised by AT&T's shenanigans. Telecomms are becoming increasingly powerful, political, and corrupt. They're going to start looking for ways to cash in on information services and stomp out internet freedoms.

A bit more meat for this story.

The contractor sis got was to build a house to a certian spec for a certian amount of money. However, they were behind on other projects as well -- money going in was going to pay for others. About half-way through the build, one of the contractor's head committed suicide; he couldn't deal with it. The partner took over, checked things out... and declared bankruptcy.

They were able to get most of the money out, became the contractor themselves, saved themselves a boat-load of cash that they put into the house and made better.

The AT&T Mobility story took me by surprise too. However, pulling the complaint, I have two paths if I accept the settlement:

Ether I am getting a tax refund, to the tune of $2.50/month for the amount I had both my iPhone (2+ years) and a data card (3+ years). Assuming June 2007 for the starting point and Sept 2010 for the ending, that's 39 months. At most, I'll get a check of $97.50.

Or... I'll get excluded as being from a governmental agency.
