The cult of the MIT coffee addicts...
Sep. 10th, 2002 12:13 pmIn 1990, monks from the Lady of of the All Night Tool roamed the campus of MIT, chanting and hitting books on their heads, inspiring the creation of Cathedral 7 in 1992. All was peaceful, and a handfasting marrage was performed in Cathedral 7.
Don't you wish everyone was that peaceful?
Unfortunately, we have the concept of "Religious Extreemism". This is where one or a group of people say "My/Our religion is the ONLY religion, and if you disagree, we'll kill you." Such extreemism, or radicalism, usually joins itself with extreme hatred for any tolerance of other religions and anyone who preaches tolerance. Examples are the Taliban/Al'Qada and Iran -- Islamic extremists. The Taliban unfortunately doesn't have some moderates Iran has, allowing Iran to last longer, but both have mixed their political structure with religion.
Politics and religion mixed together is a BadThing(tm), history tells us. The Roman Empire fell because, in part, to Christianity. Brittan had much turnoil over religion (Protistant v. pure Christian). The USA was founded over a policy of seperation of church and state, and yet we still have a problem of even mentioning God and managing the policy. It's amazing that Iran still exists, even though it is vastly younger than the United States, but it's mix of politics and religon, as well as their radicalism, is something that just can't be ignored -- it is an radically conservative force in the world.
History tells us that to even have a good foothold on politics and religion, you must be adaptive. You must adapt to hundreds if not thousands of factors that change every day, every minute. Being flexible with your stance helps immensely. And while religion may be conservative, it must also change. It may change slowly, but it must adapt. Those who do not change will find themselves out of touch with the world, several levels removed from the situation, and in risk of dying by their own hands.
Strange, no? Unfortunately, that's how the world is, from how I see it. Will religious extremism survive?
Will we continue to build insane asylums?
