Say, is it just me, or does Watership Down constitute a poor example of animal anthropomorphication? The whole point of WD is to present rabbits as rabbit-like as possible.
Anthropomorphism is a spectrum. One end is "pure human", the other end is "pure animal". The Watership Down rabbits are less anthropomorphic than Bugs Bunny because they look like real rabbits and go about on all fours, but more anthropomorphic than real rabbits because they are shown having human intellectual and social qualities such as names, motivations, verbal communication, and so on.
It's not a poor example, it's just close to the "animal" end of the scale.
