Sprint, MCI, and AT&T.

Break up AT&T, forming little Bell Companies and a long distance company named AT&T.

Then deregulate, allowing all those little Bell companies to do long distance service.  Allow for mergers, and you get...

Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T.

Lovely.

But enough about the dominant cell phone companies.

Oh. I guess AT&T's wireless is now called Cingular...

Actually... AT&T and AT&T Wireless split off after some time, the SBC/BellSouth owned Cingular bought AT&T Wireless. Then SBC bought AT&T, became AT&T, and bought BellSouth. Guess what Cingular's going to be renamed to? You betcha, AT&T Wireless.

Actually, just the opposite happened here. They spent lots of time and money converting the name to Cingular. I don't think they'll go back for awhile.

Oddly, we don't think of Verizon as a telephone company here. They're only mobile here. Nextel is here, but they only use the Sprint name pretty much.

As far as local telecom goes, we still have qwest which was US West, one of the baby bells...

And for long distance... Who uses landlines for long distance anymore? Grog and Ugh Caveman? *points at Packet8 and other similar VoIP solutions*
