A sports-economy car.  Goes aught to 60 in 4 seconds and gets more than 50 miles to the gallon.  Who did it?  Not Ford, GM, Toyota, Aston Martin, Renault, Ferrari, Honda, Mazda, Voxel, hell any car company.

Five kids in West Philadelphia High School made a soybean bio-diesel fueled car that goes like stink.

People with stake in the major North American car companies as well as fossil fuels will try and push the myth that any fuel-efficient or alternative fuel vehicle will be slow, sluggish, and pitiful to drive. They like to play on the overfed American's view that bigger is better, faster is sexier, and having a sports car is a sex symbol. And while I believe that bigger is better is a completely different sense, it doesn't nessicarily apply to vehicles.

If anything, this proves that the potential is out there for alt-fuel vehicles to perform as well as - or in some cases, even better than - fossil fuel based vehicles. They just haven't be realized yet.

And by the time they are, the damage will have already been done. Classic human folly: not acting upon anything until it's far too late.

I wish people would quit blaming the oil companies. Three reasons.

1) The oil companies would probably have no issues dropping out of gasoline. Most of them are being forced to put in an additive that they have to buy from a competitor - without any choice in the matter.
2) Plastics. 40 years ago, yes, plastics was a small market. It's not anymore. Polymer construction _sucks_ oil. All they'd have to do is reduce their production of pain-in-the-ass material.
3) Who do you think would end up being used to produce the various biodiesels? The people with the most experience and the equipment to do it. I.E. Oil companies (and/or breweries)

Admittedly, I think cars are more fun when they roar like thunder, and I like the smell of gasoline exhaust. But according to my (shallow, limited) research, diesel engines were invented to run on vegetable fuels. And diesel exhaust is a horrible pox.

Then again, if someone were to crown me King of America, I'd probably tear out all the highways and build railroads as my first act in power.

I would heavily encourage (and subsidize) mass transit myself.

I wouldn't. I'd encourage moving businesses closer to residences again. If you're a business that does everything by phone, email, internet, fax, and snail mail, there's no need for you to be dead center in a city. Move to a suburb area, so that your employees can walk to the office.

Words cannot begin to describe the level of badass-ery that this car throws down. Yoinked it for use in my [livejournal.com profile] motor_furs community, and of course I gave you credit for the find.
