A short recap for those late in the game:  SysInternals' Mark Russinovich discovers that Sony CD's hijack and expose PC's to viruses.  It also phones home, and has a broken uninstaller, but thankfully you can manually remove it (scroll down to near "EULAs and Disclosure").  It gets a ton of press, a lawsuit from Italy's EFF clone and California, and forces Sony to pull the CD's.  New York seemlingly is considering prosecution, but it better hurry, because...

Texas is prosecuting!

Isn't this level of hacking a shootable offence?

The good news behind this is that media companies will be much more wary of invasive DRM from now on.

Too bad this had to happen AFTER BMG merged with Sony. BMG set most of this up before they were bought out. At least it may prod Sony into realizing the paranoid DRM on their mp3 players and the theoretical DRM that they were considering for the PS3 may be a bad idea.
