Oct. 1st, 2005 01:31 pmI was going through my bookmarks today, and noticed I had bookmarked factcheck.org, a site from the Annenburg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. It basically double checks most everything said out of the mouths of our politicians.
So, one double-click, and I notice they did an timeline of Katrina events... And it's getting quite obvious that there were failings on all levels. Terrible.
My hope is that they (all governments involved) put some new policies in place:
So, one double-click, and I notice they did an timeline of Katrina events... And it's getting quite obvious that there were failings on all levels. Terrible.
My hope is that they (all governments involved) put some new policies in place:
- All governments should research for past disasters and studies. If there are problems, it should be fixed now instead of in the far future. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
- If it's going to take two or more days to evacuate a city, you better be looking ahead by that. Advance warning may be inaccurate, but it's still a warning!
- Contraflow is a good idea... when correctly performed in a timely manner. If you plan to open contraflow at 9am, open it at 9pm the day before. The early bird always gets the worm.
- Never turn down help, and never restrict it ether. Amtrak asked, and was turned down. The Red Cross asked, and was turned down twice -- the latter due to security reasons. If both were accepted, we may of never had the tragety at the SuperDome and Convention Center in NOLA. Let them do their jobs.
- And finally, if it's a virtual war zone there, forget police and civilian law enforcement. Get the military in there in full force. Choose the right tool for the job.
