Slashdot reported on Telestra's deployment of DSL extenders, which are basically mini DSLAMs that split a 2.5 Mbps line eight ways, and stretch the range to 20 km.
DSL's general range is about 5.5 km. I'm at least 6 km from the nearest POTS CO (which in my case, happens to be next to a liquor store). My bro-in-law used to be 1 km.
I can't wait for fiber to be run down here...
