If you ever come to Maryland and ride mass transit *anywhere*... I hope you packed a pain reliever. We have a very screwed MTA. We have a very-local bus service (which some other transit companies have picked up the slack to some success), a subway, an above-ground rail service better served by the subway, and three commuter train lines. Nothing is coordinated.

On Canmeph 2, there's Maryland And DC Area Transit. Entirely self-sufficent (by law!), it provides these services:

* Commuter train service between Baltimore, DC, Annapolis, and Western Maryland (Hagerstown, I belive). DC and Baltimore to Annapolis direct, Baltimore to Hagerstown direct also.

* Subway service in both Baltimore and DC. (I like the way DC has handled intercity rail traffic)

* Bus service inside cities to further refine stops, outside to outreach areas/Park&Ride, coordinated with Commuter Rail and Subway.

* Bus backups for Commuter Rail.

It all works well, and retired commuter volunteers help out new folks (with free coffee, donuts, and transit for them as an incentive). Cardcash chit machines are availible, as it ticket machines and vendors.
