If you're installing a Linux OS on a laptop, and you're more hard-core in Linux like me, avoid Ubuntu.  It's a more user-friendly Debian, with less software pre-compiled.

And no, this was work related.  I still need funds for a new laptop.

Actually a co-worker and friend of mine has Ubuntu running on a laptop, an HP I think. He loves it, wireless works a treat, etc. I've found that with laptops, it's sometime more the machine that's running the disty than the disty itself.

Yay for debian bashing! It's all I see in my friends list these days.

Ubuntu actually has almost as much software compiled, you just have to read the docs about adding the "universe" repository. It's also far, FAR more up to date than debian.
