I can do the swap in/out/etc with Damn Small Linux.  It also has bzip2 so it'll be even smaller of an archive.

I'm still pulling Knoppix 3.9.

Errr... oops... I forgot to remove the inital build's archive from the laptop's HD.  That's accounting for over 300 megs.  Remove that, as well as the stuff in ccache's spool and /usr/portage/distfiles, and the whole setup goes under 1 gig.  Tarballing that with bzip2 compression should get me under 700 megs eazily.

$DEITY DAMMIT! I installed Win2K on it, and the sound worked.  Now I know somethings amiss.  I'm now slapping Gentoo back on it from my whole-disk tarball, which compressed down to about 304 megs.  I know the settings need tweaking.

YATTA!!!

Sound works!  I just needed to switch the DMA settings and disable the MPU and FM portions.

I no longer need to buy a $1 USB adapter with $13 in shipping... although I am looking now for a USB hub.  I only got one port on this laptop!!!
