Usually I'm online every day, but from Sunday through mid-Tuesday I was reduced to an AIM-over-SMS connection (which thankfully did the job a bit). Stalag '99's on hiatus for the week for reasons I'll explain below.
I doubt you know where I am, so I'll give you a rough idea. Turn your TV to a national station such as CNN, MSNBC, or FOX and *wait* for the "F5 class Tornado in La Plata, Maryland" story. They'll probably show a map of Maryland. You'll see Washington DC and Baltimore. Draw two lines connecting them and call them "I-95" and "Parkway 295" (don't mess up your TV this way). Draw another line from Baltimore to Annapolis and name that "Route 2". You'll virtually frame off Anne Arundel County. I'm a good 10 or so minutes outside Baltimore in the "corner" formed by the 295 and Rt. 2 lines, south of BWI airport. If you draw a line straight down the map for a short while from Baltimore you can call it Rt 170, but that's just brownie points.
Now, durring the same storm which produced a killer tornado, a servere thunderstorm went across my area and hit near my house. Somehow, it fried a few things:
* 2 computer hubs, used
* A PCI NIC card, brand new
* An answering machine
* Two (if not more) RJ45 cable splitters
* The tie-in to the local cable service provider, who also happens to be my ISP.
So we now have TV and net service back, but lo and behold, the third guy who came out to replace the tie-in to get ISP service back saw that the cable feed itself to the neighborhood was corroded and needed replacement -- plus that due to it, there's just barely enough power to get the Cable modem to work right.
Tomorrow, they're putting in a new line (or fixing the old one, I'm not sure) and making the temporary permament. But I'll be offline again for a while. Time to scan in those musclepics!!!
