So I'm looking at AT&T Wireless' latest GoPhone offerings, which all have a true data cable so I could take the laptop, hook it up to the cell phone, and get online.

Not really.  The data cables are all USB (which makes sence, it's four lines v. nine with Serial, and faster).  Unfortunately, my laptop doesn't have USB nor 32-bit Cardbus (to add USB ports to) capability.  DOH!

*sigh*

The Motorola phones, Nokia 6200/6820 have "real" "i-m-a-usb-modem' connections. The 3200 won't act as a USB modem, even says so on nokia's site... Those three phones all support "EDGE"

...only mentioning it because the 3200 is recently been made gophone material

You know, you could get the pcmcia GSM modem card... it's cardbus though.

Wish they had GSM phones with IrDA capability, instead of USB. :(

um, you can get them. you just need to get an unlocked one off ebay -or- get like a pricey one. Some nokias do have irDA, but I'm not really sure they actually will use it as a modem.

Want to try bluetooth? half the sony phones have it.

I don't know why nokia took the ir port off all their phones.

USB was faster and used less logic to impliment. *has USB hardware catalogs*
