Today I woke up to the broadcast of McKain Bible Church's sermon on the big bang and evolution theory. The preacher tried to present a logical argument that the bible's description may be possible... but ended up confusing and annoying me. So let me get my nice lovely rant in.

First, lets get a true, legal-in-the-courts matter out of the way: Who truly wrote the bible? Some will say "God himself" -- but there is no hard proof or historical account of such. There was language in the age when the bible was written, aparently. There was Hebrew(which the first bible was written in), and according to historians there was also anchent Greek, Latin, and others (that we can prove). There is more than likely to be records in history should a huge deity showed up with a book of hir (I can't prove gender, so we'll use both) wisdom -- multiple records, as well as a marked shift of religion (we would have first hand knowledge). There isn't, so this isn't the case.

Mostly, folks will say "God inspired the writers," which is akin to "my muse is talking to me, telling me about what to write." As you read the bible (yes, I have), it presents itself as a tale, a story, with multiple plots and many points (even though it may be a dry read, but hey, it was raw stuff back then). It reads like a work of fiction, though, to convey messages about living a good life. A standard novel you would read in high school for your English class. Is it true? Maybe. Proven in whole? Not a bit. Some evidence is lost to prove the tales, but then some is also several generations removed from the source. A newspaper this is not (even though we may now compare it to the New York Times). Take a few grains of salt. Take a few silos.

So what does this mean? It means that you shouldn't take the bible as the absolute truth, just as science is not the absolute truth (it's a matter of precision and accuracy). It also means you should have a healthy debate about it once in a while. The Jews recognise that... several books on the bible are nothing but debate.

What's stopping you from arguring over the bible?

Nice .. this is part of the reason I became an agnostic.

My Rant on Religion
Yes, I believe there is a/are higher power(s), but let me define them myself rather than try to force your beliefs down my throat and into my brain.

I regularly have 'fun' scaring the bejebus out of Jehovas' Witnesses and Mormons by talking to them. I have read their bibles and come up with arguments from said texts which make what they're trying to tell me from the same book look like bunk. My neighbors like me because I usually send the bible thumpers running away from the neighborhood rather than just going on to the next house.

My thing is .. give me a copy of your 'holy' texts, I'll read them and see if I can agree with a majority of it, but until I do find that elusive religion which fits *my* worldview, bugger off and take your politics with you as well .. since I find for a lot of people the twain are intertwined to a frightening degree.
End Rant

May life continue to surprise those who truly deserve it and may you find not just the person of your dreams, but the person of your desires.

There's alot of stuff which I don't agree with the main dogma in the Christian churches which make me agnostic. I'm waiting for proof that some higher being or power caused the Big Bang. Thus, the Church of the Waiting Canmephian -- a church which doesn't belive in blind faith, but possiblities and proof.
