Idle wonderment: What is this dress called?

Current guesses say it's Chinese, and not a Japanese Gi (hard G).

I would agree that it's Chinese. The neckline is called a Mandarin collar. If you look closely, you will see an edge of fabric going from the 'v' in the collar to her left armpit. That's the front opening, which fastens on the side, just behind the arm, ususally with three to four cloth tie points, tied in bows. It's done in a traditional embroidered Chinese silk fabric, but the short sleeves indicate a modern adaptation. I'd simply call it a 'Chinese Modern blouse, with a Mandarin collar'.
