A questionable purchase.

I was so bored with S.S.D.D. that I bought myself a Playstation Portable (a PSP).  Origionally, I was going to slap music and movies on it with a 2 Gig Memory Stick Pro Duo.  Forget games.

How wrong I was.

Music is no problem, as long as it's MP3 or AAC format.  It's the video -- which requires you to use a specalized version of h264 that dependent on what firmware you have (I upgraded to 3.30) will have you switching setting on your encoder for a full day and a half.

Ugh.  I want a media player that's 480x272, plays Ogg Vorbis files and any AVI I can throw at it (and then some).  The PSP ain't it.  It's a game machine that can play specialty formatted media.  Plus, I got it for $200, a full day before Sony dropped the price to $170.  The media card's $60 from Office Depot, a 2 gig Memory Stick Pro Duo that doesn't like anything but the PSP. 

So I'm basically teh ded. I bought crap and paid a heavy price for it.  I'm very tempted to sell it now, and likely recoup half my losses.

Anyone want a PSP?

Before you get rid of it, look into whether the firmware version you have has been cracked yet. I'm pretty sure you can open it wide up with a little help from the Internet.

Personally speaking, I wasn't happy with my PSP either. I had it for about a week and then traded it in for a Nintendo DS. Haven't been happier since. HOWEVER, the DS definately doesn't work well as a media center as ya know ^^.

I wouldn't mind one. There's one or two games that interest me.
I DO know that there is an add-on you can pick up for the DS that turns it into a media center. Though I"m not sure what it plays.

No no.. -thinks- It was.. IIRC... a 5 gig harddrive with some program on it that played video, music, etc... I'll have to dig it up again. Looked nifty. Was like 80 bucks or so.

Check the homebrew scene. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_AleX http://www.dark-alex.org/ Although, you may have temporarily screwed yourself over by getting the latest firmware.

The machine you really want would probably be a GP2X. Dual core linux for about $180. "Video Playback of MPEG, MPEG4, AVI, DivX 3.11,4x,5x and Higher, XVid, WMV(7,8,9 Later On) Playback and more

AVIDemux has an option to auto-convert video files to a format PSP can read. You might check into it.
