It can't be aluminum, because I want to shine a cheap light through the back and make it into a cheap portable light table.

I see. If you have a dump with a store attached to it you should be able to find a dead scanner to use for something like that. I almost got a back-lighted drafting table at mine for under $20, but it was too big to fit in my apartment.

Use two large binder clips and a piece of plexiglas.
Scuff the back of the plexiglas with sandpaper, that'll make it light up with a cheap fluorescent hand light.
