Take a blank CD, and shove into your CD Burner. Go to Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org) and pull an ISO copy of the latest version. Burn the ISO as a full CD Image to the CD. Label the newly burned CD "Knoppix Linux." Boot off of the CD Futz around with it, knowing you're not installing anything over your windows install.
Got Mac? Go with Ubuntu Linux (http://www.ubuntu.org) instead, but make sure you get the LiveCD iso's.
