I got sound working on redwolf, but it's a mess. It turns out that the particular chip it uses, a Neomagic 256 ZX, is a particularly problematic chip (along with it's cousins in the Neomagic 256 line). The folks behind OSS's and ALSA's drivers end up tearing their hair out over what seems to be four different revisions that the nm256 driver covers -- and what one set of patched fixes breaks the others. It also uses video memory as a sound buffer, so X11 has to be told not to muck with it. Maddening, isn't it?
