Compare with the Spider Man series, as well as Batman Begins. All of them are an example of having the plot be the strong point, driving the special effects. Batman Begins I have to mention being very plot central, being very realistic, and having the perfect cast for, blowing every other live-action Batman movie out of the water.
Also compare the animated Incredibles. As comments suggest, they take four years to make the movie, but one and a half are spent writing and storylining it. The same can be said for Finding Nemo, Pixar's other great movie, as well as Dreamworks' Shrek series.
And finally, compare with Sin City, which is regarded as the best comic adaptation. I hear they stuck to the books as a law to follow, and look how well it came out.
