Got an old Sun Sparc external CDROM that looks like it's supposed to go to an Sparc IPX? Guess what you really have!!!
Open up the case by judicious use of a flat-bladed screwdriver. It's hooked in on the sides near the back by tabs inside the case, so popping them will take it.
You'll find out that you have a SCSI enclosure that takes 50 pin HD plugs and uses standard 50 pin SCSI drives.
The drive itself is held in by a metal plate screwed in under the drive by four screws. Just slide out the drive a bit, pull out the ribbon cable, power cable, and SCSI address cable, and yank it out.
Now all you need to do is take out the screws, chuck the 1x, shove in a better SCSI drive, and snap it all back together.
