Got a Windows box? Security tips:
Nov. 6th, 2003 08:00 pmIf you got a personal proxy or even some AntiVirus software, thinking you'll be safe, think again. You got alot of work to do. Follow these tips:
- Go to Gibson Research Corporation (they make SpinRite) and click on the "Sheilds Up" logo. It'll take you to the main page. Go through the site. I'd recomment you Shoot the Messenger and secure your system from the basics.
- Meanwhile, keep reading that site. Steve Gibson really knows his stuff, including how some personal firewalls don't protect you.
- Infact, if you have a Cable/DSL router, and you're hooked up your system and your DSL/Cable modem to it, you have a firewall. A HARDWARE firewall. Any attack will hit it first, and get stopped. Linksys uses Linux in their firmware, which is more secure anyway.
- Go to Grisoft and pull a copy of AGV Antivirus. Yes, it's free software. Infact, all the stuff I menton here is free. Send that paid-for copy of Norton back for a refund and save yourself the cash.
