I've been advised to watch out for the sewing machines, especially the cheaper singers. They use plastic gears, which will wear out quickly. There were a few brands I Had recommended to me, but I don't recall the names off of the top of my head (this is from my mother, who spend six months researching exactly which machine to get to replace her old Elna a year or so ago)

Mom did the research. Brother was right out, as well as the higher-end computerized models. Nope, she wants something simple, so it's going to be a Viking 118 for $370.
