Penguin Ranting (techy)

I'm going to say this about some distros:

Debian: If it weren't for all the internal politics getting in the way, we'd have a great distro.  Otherwize, alot of good programs are not availible.  Thank $DEITY for Ubuntu!

Redhat/Fedora and clones: Pity those who get on the bad side of RPM, with multiple dependencies, circular depenencies, and the tendency to use the force option more often than not.  Pity those who try to find more software though repositories, and have to deal with fifty of them just to get the right files.  I haven't tried Mandrake, and last time I played with SuSe was before Novell bought them.

Yeah, Ubuntu is nice. There is a lack of some software, but I can usually find a third party repository or install all of the -dev packages for required libraries then install it from source.

Avoid all that crap: Use Gentoo! Portage rocks. I have to admit though, I just Ubuntu on an older Dell laptop, and except for the wireless card (Netgear,) it did a great job. Came up, no hardware issues. Now I just need to figure out the infrared setup, and I'm good.
