Note to me:

The Nokia 6800 works with IrDA and is supported by the GoPhone.  Linux stuff here:

The 6820 replaces the 6800, and I think the 6800 is in end-of-life cycle, as the trainer 1 year ago today had one of those.

Does it still have IrDA capability?

yes it does. IT has bluetooth too, so I'd probably go for that.
And EDGE
and... unless you want to pay 300$ for a UMTS phone and 80$ a month for unlimited data transfer, that's the best phone you can get.

...

oh BTW, all phones are gophone compatible, you just move the sim card. You just can't "buy" a stock gophone nokia 6820.

... AAAAND for giggles, you can get an unlocked one off EBAY (NO WARRANTY!) That would let you use any GSM carrier's SIM card.

Me personally, if I thought I could use it, I'd get the unlimited internet on the phone, but I'd probably make them lose money like people who seriously abuse N&W minutes.

EXCEPT the TDMA phones. Had to switch phones when I went from Free2Go to GoPhone.

Besides, I doubt there's a Serial->Bluetooth adapter out there. I got a IrDA dongle, though, so I'm groovy with ether the 6800 or the 6820.

BTW, I just move the SIM over from the old one to the new one, right? That simple?

Yup, GSM phones are fun that way.

Most of the Nokia 6xxx series have infrared. The TDMA phones can't actually use the internet, but you can use them as a wireless fax if necessary.

The GSM models you can, I just have never used it for such. Unless there is software loaded on the phone specificly for the gophone service (which I don't think there is, other than checking balance via the WAP interface) it should be fine. Besides if you can download from the phone, you can download any software on it and upload it to the other phone.

Well, actually, there's two ways you can do it: Using GRPS or using it as an actual modem.

I plan to burn my GRPS minutes. :)
